Initiation of Manjushri |  Saturday August 14, 11:30 a.m.

Manjushri, "he of sweet beauty" is one of the "three bodhisattvas", along with Chenrezig (buddha of compassion) and Chagna Dorje (buddha of power).

In Tibet he is prayed to every morning: it is considered that with his flaming sword he drives away the demons of ignorance and brings light. It is also said that those practitioners whose scholarship is outstanding are a reincarnation of Manjushri: therefore in the Khön lineage, from which the Sakya family comes, there are numerous masters considered as emanations of Manjushri, among them the current Sakya Trichen.

Manjushri is the lord of wisdom and inspires and gives eloquence to those who want to enter the path of the Buddha. He is the protector of scholars and students and, to those who invoke him, he opens the paths to wisdom, granting them understanding strength and memory. An ideal practice for those who are starting out on the road and for those who, already deep, seek to cultivate and safeguard their wisdom.

Chagna Dorje Bhutadamara Initiation |  Saturday August 14, 5.30pm

Chagna Dorje or Vajrapani ("the one who holds the vajra") is another of the transcendental bodhisattvas and represents the enlightened power of all Buddhas. Vajrapani Bhutadamara is a special aspect of the Vajrapani Deity.

The vajra is a very common and profound element and symbol in Tibetan Buddhism. It refers to the nature of the Buddha, common to all men, which cannot be damaged or modified by any force, and which has the power to end the thoughts that cloud reality. Thus, Vajrapani, "the one who carries the vajra", is the one who guarantees the realization of the enlightened mind. Power is understood, then, as the ability to remove obstacles, external and internal, that get in the way of spiritual practice.

It is a fundamental practice for anyone who wants to delve deep into the vajrayana path, as the obstacles can be very fierce for those who have made a commitment to the dharma. Therefore, in the Sakya tradition, it is strongly recommended that the serious practitioner make the retreat of this deity, before engaging in other higher tantras, due to its extraordinary power to pacify obstacles.
